May 2019

Once again we are planning to hold a ‘Together’ service for all our St. Nicholas congregations on Sunday 19th May at 10:30am. This year we welcome Revd Johnny Juckes as our guest preacher. Johnny started his ordained ministry in Sevenoaks as curate many years ago. Following ministries in London and Hull, he has recently been appointed to be President, Oak Hill Theological College. It is tremendous news that he has taken on this very significant role as the training of ordinands is a particularly strategic area. He will be preaching on Revelation 3:14-22, Jesus' letter to the church in Laodicea. It’s a passage where Jesus issues each of us not only with a powerful challenge, but also with a wonderful, heart-warming invitation.

Whilst the young people and adults will be in the church building, the children’s ministry led by Cara Smith and Hannah Blake will take place in a large marquee on the Rectory lawn (main access from the link road towards Weald Heights Care Home). The children will be looking at Psalm 2 with its tremendous vision of the greatness of our Lord Jesus Christ in the face of the world’s defiance – a message which they (and adults also!) constantly need to hear amid all the cultural pressures we face.

This is a day for us to make a priority so that we can be encouraged by God’s word and be an enormous encouragement to each other. Members of each of our six congregations will need to come at a different time from their normal schedule, and especially for those who normally attend at 8am, 4pm or 6.30pm, I recognise that this may mean considerable re-organisation of your usual Sunday routines. But it will be worth it as we all gather together, delighting and focussing on the Lord Jesus!

For those who are able to join us, we have special events before and after the main gathering at 10:30am. So, from 9:15am we will be serving breakfast from one of the marquees on the Rectory lawn (see sign-up details below). Also, after the service we have facilities for you to bring your own picnic lunch in the Rectory garden with the provision of drinks, ice cream, bouncy castle and face painting. To sign up, please click here.

During the day we also hope to launch our next recommended reading – “Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. Many will have already read this hugely inspirational book, but it bears re-reading – indeed, Professor Jim Packer used to encourage all his students to read it once a year! We aim to have three different versions: one for adults, one for children, and then a version specifically written for very young ones. I want to commend this book in the warmest possible terms. Look out for more information and special offers on the day!

So, Sunday 19th May promises to be a glorious day of opportunity for us as a whole church family. Please join me so that together we encounter Christ and are strengthened and built up in our knowledge of Him.
